Sant Julià de Lòria

The visitor entering Andorra across the Spanish frontier makes first contact with the Principality in the parish of Sant Julià de Lòria. Large supermarkets, an abundance of petrol stations, but Sant Julià also offers art lovers a great number of churches and small chapels.

Historically this parish was the centre of the tobacco industry, one of the most important in the country, and it consists of the centres of Sant Julià de Lòria, Bixessarri, Aixovall, Certers, Llumeneres, Nagol, Aixirivall, Aubinyà, Juberri and Fontaneda.

If you like nature, we recommend an escape to the woods of La Peguera and La Rabassa which contain really unforgettable spots. A visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Canòlic, where the image of the patron saint of the parish is venerated, is also a must.

Perhaps Sant Julià is one of the parishes which have shown most zeal in preserving their folklore. On the day of its Village Fete the Ball de la Marratxa is danced in which two men in top hats garnished with multicoloured ribbons and wearing the traditional costume of the country perform accompanied by three young ladies each. It is not proven that this dance represents the two Coprinces dancing with the six parishes (one should remember that until 1978 Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella were a single parish, making a total of six, not seven as now)!
