Escaldes - Engordany
The nerve centre of Andorran commerce consists of Avinguda Meritxell and Avinguda Carlemany, a single artery with two names, the first for the part in Andorra la Vella and the second for the part in Escaldes. Until 1978 Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella were a single parish but constant population growth and the desires of its inhabitants led to it being split up into the two centres.Escaldes owes its name to the hot spa waters which are still pouring out of public fountains at temperatures of over 60° centigrade. Many private houses and hotels have these waters and it is no surprise that they have given rise to a giant spa centre. The spa fun centre of Andorra, called Caldea, is poised to become a major tourist attraction thanks to its offer of warm or scented baths, geysers, water jets, cool waterfalls, steam baths, sauna, solarium and numerous springs with temperatures of between 15 and 38 degrees centigrade.
Escaldes - Engordany
Escaldes-Engordany contains architectural jewels such as the church of Sant Romà at Vilars (8th and 9th century) and Sant Miquel d'Engolasters, a 12th century Romanesque church.
In less than fifty years, Escaldes-Engordany has gone from being a totally farming community to being a great commercial and hotel centre.
It is worth noting its Jazz Festival which year in year out welcomes the best jazz musicians and has already won worldwide renown.
