Wellspring of Culture
- Escaldes - Engordany -

This parish, which was created in 1978, is the last one in order of protocol. The name Escaldes is of Roman origin and refers to the hot springs the flow forth at a temperature of 70ºC, setting them among the warmest thermal waters in Europe. The development of this town, which is situated in the shady part of the valley, began in the 15th century with the creation of a textile industry that took advantage of the hot water to wash and dye wool. Although the most important population centre of the parish was originally Engordany, which stands in the sunny part of the valley, it was soon absorbed by the rapidly developing Escaldes.
You can start from Escaldes by leaving the town in the direction of Encamp. These sights may be enjoyed:
  • The Roc del Metge: from here you can see where the thermal water springs forth. Beyond this point, along the riverside walkway you come to:
  • The Plaça (square) de Santa Anna: here there is a boundary cross from the Gothic period and the old Engordany bridge.

A very short distance away, in the direction of Andorra la Vella, you come to the Plaça de I'Església where an important edifice on this itinerary may be seen:
  • The church of Sant Pere Màrtir: this parish church in the neo-Romanesque style was built in 1962.

Along Avinguda Carlemany you come to another square, Plaça Coprínceps, from where you can see

  • the interesting Casa de la Creu. This house was designed by the Modernist architect J. Puig i Cadafalch.

The village feast of Escaldes-Engordany is held on July 25, 26 and 27.

To continue this itinerary you should leave the town in direction of Encamp. On the right you will come to a turning that runs to Engolasters, from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the valley of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany.
