  • The church of Sant Joan de Caselles rises up on a hill at the side of the N-11 road going towards Pas de la Casa and France. Situated approximately 1 km from the village of Canillo, it is a Romanesque building dating from the end of the 1 lth century, beginning of the 12th. The belfry is in the Romanesque Lombard style. Two porches were added at later periods, one at the entrance to the church and the other on the west side. lnside, there is a stucco of a royal personase preservad from the mid-12th century, designed on a mural plaque which also features the figures of a soldier calied LONGINUS and a centurion calied STEPHANON. A depietion of the Sun and the Moon dominates the scene. In the apse there is a 16th century Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, inspired by Nordic and ltalian compositions. Outside it is still possible to see some of the tombs from the medieval cemetery which surrounded the church.

lf you take the road that crosses the river and runs to Prats and El Forn, you will come to a turning on the left that leads to:

  • The Seven-arrned cross: this boundary cross in the Gothie styie is the subject of a popular legend.
