The way to France
- Meritxell -
| These are the main points of interest here: The Meritxell Sanctuary. In 1873 the Virgin of Meritxell was made the Patron Saint of the Valleys of Andorra by the Consell GeneraL Her Saint's day, Andorra's National Holiday, is celebrated on September 8. The oldest building to be found, is a church dating from 1658 which stands on top of a Romanesque building of which only the floor of the apse and the east wali are visible. In 1972, on the night of the Saint's day, the building was destroyed by fire. During that fire, the statue of the Virgin of Meritxell, a Romanesque sculpture dating back to the end of the 12th century, beginning of the 13th century, was burnt. This was the statue which according to the legend was found under a dog rose in full bloom in the middle of January. The Gothic Virgin, four altarpieces (one Gothic and three Baroque) were also destroyed, together with all the motifs of the head, the work of Oromi, a painter from la Seu d'Urgell. |

| As a result of this incident, the
Consell General asked Ricard Bofill's architectural company to build a New Sanetuary which
was inaugurated in 1976. This new building drew its inspiration both from local
Rormanesque Andorran architecture and from the great Catalan monastic centres, with ele-
rnents taken from the Florentine Renaissance and lslamic Art. The old sanctuary has been recentiy restored. In its interior, you can visit the cornmemorative exhibition Merítxell, memòria which sets out to explain and immortalize the story of the village, the church, the patronage and the fire and where the most representativa pieces are shown. A retrospectiva audiovisual projection takes us from the past until today. Right at the entrance of the two sanctuaries, there is a monument, commemorating the 7th centenary of the signing of the second Pariatge (1288). This is the work of the Andorran sculptor Roger Mas. If you now return to the main road, you soon come to: CANILLO |
